Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered a blistering speech over the weekend.

He didn’t hold back his thoughts on former President Trump.

Setting the Stage: A Commencement Address

Speaking to graduating law students at the University of Minnesota, Walz chose a notable platform for his strong remarks.

The setting for a commencement ceremony is typically celebratory.

However, Walz told the audience he felt compelled to speak plainly about the political situation facing the country.

Some would say, ‘Boy, this is getting way too political for a commencement address.’ But I would argue: I wouldn’t be honoring my oath if I didn’t address this head on,” he stated.

The governor urged the future lawyers in attendance to be vigilant.

He positioned them as crucial defenders of legal principles.

Democrats Debate Strategy Post-2024

Walz’s speech comes amid a broader discussion within the Democratic party.

Following the 2024 election results, Democrats have been openly debating their path forward.

Many voters and leaders within the party express frustration.

There’s a sense that the party needs a clearer message and more forceful approach to counter the new administration.

Jockeying for Position in 2028

Governor Walz, who served as the Vice Presidential nominee in 2024, is widely seen as a potential contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.

He joins a list of other prominent Democrats who have been active on the national stage.

This group includes figures traveling to early voting states and making high-profile appearances.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has also been outspoken, criticizing Democrats he views as insufficiently opposing Mr. Trump.

Pritzker previously drew attention for comments likening Trump’s rhetoric to historical events.

Other potential 2028 candidates like Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have also been actively engaged in public discussions and events.

Walz and Maryland Governor Wes Moore have upcoming stops planned in South Carolina.

Pushing Back on Party Tactics

During his address, Walz also took issue with some within his own party.

He scoffed at suggestions that Democrats should focus primarily on issues like trade, where polling might be more favorable for them.

Instead, Walz argued for a focus on what he termed “the rule of law.”

He also directed criticism towards large law firms.

Walz accused some firms of being “feckless” and “cowardly,” alleging they have yielded to pressure in the face of threats.

He suggested some firms have attempted to compensate by offering significant pro bono work or other benefits.

Walz called this a “flagrant betrayal” of the legal oath and urged graduates to avoid working with such firms.

The “Proof” Cited by Walz

In his speech, Walz pointed to specific examples he claimed demonstrated a disregard for legal norms.

These were the instances he presented as evidence supporting his strong language.

Among the examples cited by Walz were aspects of Mr. Trump’s immigration enforcement policies.

He mentioned the deportation of alleged gang members, including reports of individuals being sent to a specific facility in El Salvador.

Walz raised questions regarding due process in these actions.

He also brought up the instance of the Qatari ruling family reportedly offering a gifted jet to the president.

According to Walz, these instances collectively illustrate a pattern.

This is what the crumbling of rule of law looks like in real time. And it’s exactly what the founders of this nation feared: A tyrant, abusing power to persecute scapegoats and enemies,” Walz told the graduates.

He characterized the current situation as a “genuine emergency.”

Walz told the audience that the president finds “new ways to trample rights and undermine the rule of law” every day.

Looking Ahead

Governor Walz’s fiery commencement address underscores the contentious political climate and the ongoing debate within the Democratic party about how best to confront it.

His remarks position him firmly among those advocating for a direct challenge on issues of governance and legal principles as Democrats look towards future elections.
