Imagine being face-to-face with the President of the United States in the Oval Office, spotting *that* infamous red button, and being dared to push it.

One college football player actually went for it.

Champions Off the Field

It all started back in 2018. The Alabama Crimson Tide had just pulled off a stunning victory against the Georgia Bulldogs to clinch the College Football National Championship.

Trailing 13-0 at halftime, they rallied for an overtime win, cementing their place in college football history yet again.

As is tradition for national champions, the team scored an invitation to the White House to celebrate their hard-earned triumph.

A Presidential Welcome

The host for this prestigious visit was then-President Donald Trump.

Legendary coach Nick Saban, speaking recently before introducing Trump at a University of Alabama commencement ceremony, recalled the 2018 visit.

Saban noted that Trump was a “very gracious host” during their time at the White House.

Inside the Oval Office

According to Saban, Trump did something unique during their visit.

He apparently became the first president to invite the team captains *into* the actual Oval Office during such a celebration.

Saban accompanied his three captains into one of the most powerful rooms on the planet.

Recounting the moment years later, Saban painted a picture of the scene.

“I take the three captains in the Oval Office, and the president’s really nice to everybody…”

The Mysterious Red Button

Sitting prominently on the President’s desk was an object that immediately caught the players’ attention.

Saban described it:

“…and he’s got this very big, good-looking, auspicious box on his desk that has a red button on top.”

You know the one. The button steeped in myth and pop culture legend, often associated with world-altering decisions.

Naturally, curiosity got the better of one of the players.

“And one of the players said, ‘Is that what you launch the missiles with?’”

It’s the question everyone probably wonders.

The Presidential Dare

Instead of a simple yes or no, President Trump reportedly responded with a direct challenge.

“And [Trump] said, ‘Well, push it and find out.’”

Talk about pressure. Faced with a potential “launch missiles” button and a presidential dare, the player initially hesitated.

Who wouldn’t? The potential consequences seemed… significant.

But Trump, Saban recalled, wasn’t letting it go.

He insisted the player push the button.

After some understandable reluctance, one player mustered the courage.

Saban identified the brave soul as former Alabama linebacker Rashaan Evans.

Evans stepped up to the desk, reached out, and pressed the mysterious red button.

So, what happened next? Did alarms blare? Did the Pentagon call?

Not quite.

Saban revealed the surprising, and frankly hilarious, outcome:

“So [former Alabama linebacker] Rashaan Evans finally got the guts up, went over, pushed the red button — some lady came in with a Coke on a tray.”

It turns out the ominous red button wasn’t for nuclear codes, but reportedly a simple service call button, in this instance used humorously by the President to summon a Diet Coke, his preferred drink.

Saban shared the amusing anecdote before Trump delivered the commencement address at the University of Alabama, thanking the former president for choosing the university for the occasion.

It’s safe to say Rashaan Evans has a White House story few can top.
