This Carriage House Has A Garage That's Cooler Than Your Living Room
This property features a recently added carriage house, designed by architects Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill. The original 1820 farmhouse on the property was renovated by the owners, Purdy and Josh Eaton, and a decade later, they decided to add this separate structure.
Here's the exterior—white clapboard, big windows, cupola flex. From the street, timeless.

From this angle, the greenhouse dining looks a conservatory. Dinner in a terrarium?

And then another greenhouse—A-frame vibes. Pretty, but do plants judge me?

Okay, this slatted wall—honey brown and cozy. Sounds better than it looks?

Garage glows with wood paneling. Functional, but almost too pretty to park in.

Reading nook mural is sweet—little farmhouse hills. Kinda storybook, kinda zen.

Another mural—bolder blues and greens. I mean, cool, but maybe too much?

Here's a mellow living spot—soft green walls, gentle light. Easy Sunday energy.

Powder room said go big—jewel wallpaper everywhere. Anyone know why the gloss?

Game room wins—burgundy felt, black cues. From this angle, looks tournament ready.

Skylight geometry is wild. Light pours down, cream walls catch everything.

Back to the entry—soft green panels. Fresh without screaming. Boots feel welcomed.

Details
This carriage house is a unique addition to a historic Connecticut farmhouse. The owners wanted a separate space for entertaining and work, and the architects designed a freestanding structure that complements the rural setting. The design cleverly incorporates a three-car garage, but avoids it looking like a typical garage by focusing on its cubic mass.
Inside, the carriage house offers a departure from the main house, with a more casual and colorful approach. It includes a home office, gym, sauna, and a recreation room with a pool table. A standout feature is the garage interior, which uses vertical-grain fir beadboard with a distinctive painted "water line" that gives it a unique, industrial-chic feel. The property also includes a greenhouse and plans for a swimming pool, all designed to create a cohesive and historic-feeling compound.
