Schumer called ‘idiot’ for blaming Trump over deadly NYC Mexican Navy ship crash
A tragic accident in New York City. A deadly ship collision. And then, a top politician pointed the finger.
But the target of his blame quickly sparked outrage and disbelief.

The Brooklyn Bridge Collision
A solemn incident unfolded over the weekend near the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.
A Mexican Navy training ship, the 150-foot tall Cuauhtémoc, reportedly experienced mechanical issues.
Tragically, its masts struck the underside of the bridge.
The collision resulted in the deaths of two cadets aboard the vessel.
An investigation into the precise cause is underway.

Schumer Weighs In
Following the crash, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a press release.
He acknowledged the “more questions than answers” surrounding the incident.
He highlighted the critical role of bridges and waterways for transportation and security.
He also mentioned the U.S. Coast Guard’s function in monitoring and securing these areas.

Pointing the Finger at Trump and “DOGE”
However, Schumer’s statement then took a sharp turn.
He suggested that the “Trump administration is potentially jeopardizing our national and economic security.”
He specifically cited what he termed a “DOGE-implemented hiring freeze” at the Coast Guard.
He argued this could have potentially impeded the Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic System (VTS).
This system operates similarly to air traffic control for ships.
Schumer implied this alleged staffing issue could be connected to the deadly crash.

Immediate and Fiery Backlash
Schumer’s claim sparked an immediate wave of criticism, particularly from conservatives on social media.
Many found his attempt to link the accident to the Trump administration baffling and inappropriate.
Conservative commentator Guy Benson quipped on X:
“Mexican vessel: Loses control, hits bridge,” he wrote. “Schumer: I’ll never forgive Drumpf for this!”
Radio host Mark Levin was blunt, posting:
“Schumer is a stupid, evil man.”
Substack writer Jim Treacher added sarcastically:
“I, too, question Donald Trump’s leadership of the Mexican Navy.”
Another commentator suggested it was a case of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” leading Schumer to “pass the blame from the Mexican Navy onto them…”

Official Rebuttal from DHS
The criticism wasn’t limited to social media pundits. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) itself issued a forceful public correction.
Using their official X account, DHS directly refuted Schumer’s accusations.
They stated unequivocally:
“Minority Leader Schumer’s accusations that a hiring freeze led to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic Services not being adequately staffed are FALSE.”
The DHS post continued, clarifying the actual situation.
“The US Coast Guard has been fully supported and been exempt from hiring freezes,” they posted.
Furthermore, they addressed the core claim about the VTS system’s relevance to the accident.
“Additionally, this incident had nothing to do with Vessel Traffic Services— when a ship loses propulsion in a high current area, the vessel needs to engage all capabilities to stop and ideally tugs are nearby to support.”
The DHS urged Schumer to verify his information before making public statements.
“We encourage Minority Leader Schumer to get his facts straight before he misleads the American people.”

The Reality of the Situation
A Coast Guard spokesperson further confirmed the DHS’s points to Fox News Digital.
They stated that the U.S. Coast Guard’s New York Vessel Traffic Service was fully operational during the incident.
It was operating correctly according to established procedures.
Initial reports and statements from officials suggested the cause was mechanical failure combined with strong currents, not a lack of VTS staffing.
Leo Terrell, senior counsel to Trump’s assistant AG, summed up the sentiment of many critics simply:
“He is an idiot,” Terrell posted on X.
The focus remains on the ongoing investigation into the mechanical failure and circumstances aboard the Mexican Navy ship that led to the tragic collision.
