Potential Disaster Averted: UK Primary School Evacuated Over Grenade
Show and tell is usually about prized toys or holiday souvenirs.
But one UK primary school assembly took a dramatic turn when a student brought something entirely unexpected.

An Unusual Show and Tell
The incident unfolded at Osmaston CofE Primary Care School in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
Staff and students were gathered for a Second World War themed show and tell assembly.
Things started routinely enough, with children sharing various items.
Head teacher Jeanette Hart was overseeing the assembly.
“It was quite an eventful assembly,” said Mrs Hart.
“It was going fine and there was a boy who brought an old bullet case in, which I knew about, but then his friend produced a hand grenade from his pocket. That, I was not expecting.”
A hand grenade. From a student’s pocket.
The shock in the assembly hall was immediate.

Quick Thinking Under Pressure
Faced with the potentially dangerous object, Mrs Hart had to act fast.
She wasn’t sure if the device was live or safe.
Prudence dictated treating it as if it were dangerous.
Mrs Hart said, “It looked old and I thought it might be safe, but I didn’t want to take the risk.”
She calmly ended the assembly.
Taking the grenade from the boy, she then carefully carried it outside.
Her goal was to get it away from the children and the main school building.
“I ended the assembly, took it off him and slowly carried it outside and put it behind a far tree in the car park. I wasn’t 100 per cent happy carrying it, to be honest.”
With the device isolated, the next critical step was taken.

Emergency Response Deployed
Emergency services were immediately alerted.
The school was evacuated as a precaution, ensuring the safety of all students and staff.
Police were quickly on the scene.
Recognizing the potential danger, they called in specialist help.
Army bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the school.
Their expertise was needed to assess the situation and the device.
The school community waited anxiously as the experts prepared to examine the grenade.

Family Heirloom Causes Stir
According to reports, the student had brought the grenade into school without his parents’ knowledge.
It was believed to be a family heirloom.
While intended as an interesting item for the WWII assembly, its arrival caused significant disruption and concern.
The quick actions of the head teacher were praised by authorities.
Their swift response to a highly unusual and potentially dangerous situation ensured everyone’s safety.

The Moment of Truth
With the school secured and the device located, the bomb disposal experts went to work.
Using specialized equipment, they began their assessment.
Derbyshire Police confirmed the experts used X-ray equipment to examine the grenade internally.
This sophisticated technology allowed them to determine the state of the device without directly handling it unnecessarily.
The tension hung in the air as the analysis was carried out.
Would it be live?
Was the school community just minutes away from a potential disaster?

Safety Confirmed
After their examination, the army explosives experts delivered the crucial news.
They determined that the grenade was safe.
It posed no risk of detonation.
A spokesperson for the Matlock, Cromford, Wirksworth and Darley Dale Police Safer Neighbourhood Team elaborated on the findings.
“We even got to see those [X-ray] images and [were] told a detailed analysis of how there was nothing that would set the grenade off.”
The immediate threat was over.
Children and staff were able to return to the school after the all-clear was given.
Police took the opportunity to offer a piece of guidance to parents and guardians following the incident.
“Just a word of guidance for parents and guardians – double check what your kids are taking to show-and-tell, especially when they are family heirlooms.”
The day served as a stark reminder of the unexpected items that can sometimes turn up, highlighting the importance of vigilance and rapid, professional response in potential emergencies.
