Governor Calls Trump ‘Tyrant’ At Law School, White House Instantly Responds
A prominent political figure delivered a commencement address that quickly ignited a firestorm.
The counter-punch from the administration came back just as fast.
Political Stage or Commencement Address?
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently spoke at the University of Minnesota’s law school commencement ceremony.
Walz, who was the vice presidential nominee in 2024, used the platform to address the graduating class, but his remarks quickly veered into sharp political criticism.
His appearance comes amid travels to early voting states, signaling potential future political ambitions.

Strong Words for Graduates
The governor urged the new lawyers in attendance to be a “first and last line of defense” against what he termed “abuses of power.”
He told the crowd they were graduating into a “genuine emergency,” according to reports.
“Every single day, the president of the United States finds new ways to trample rights and undermine the rule of law.”
He framed his pointed comments as necessary, saying he wouldn’t be honoring his oath if he didn’t address the situation head-on.

Citing Specific Examples (From Walz’s View)
To back his claims, Walz cited specific actions.
He pointed to immigration crackdowns, referencing the deportation of alleged gang members to El Salvador without what he termed “due process.”
Another example he brought up was the purported offer of a gifted jet from the Qatari ruling family.

The Debate Within the Party
Walz’s speech occurs as Democrats are debating their strategy following the 2024 election.
There are frustrations among some voters about the party’s approach to opposing the current administration.
Walz is not the only Democrat traveling and making strong statements.
Other figures like Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg have also recently criticized the administration and called for clear Democratic messaging.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are also active.
Walz himself reportedly scoffed at some Democrats who suggest focusing on issues like trade rather than the rule of law.

Criticizing the Legal Community
Beyond his focus on the administration, Walz also took aim at parts of the legal profession.
He criticized what he called “feckless” and “cowardly” big law firms.
He claimed these firms had “acquiesced” in the face of pressure.
He went as far as to urge the graduating class to refuse to work for or with these firms.

In his most striking language, Walz explicitly labeled the president.
He called him a “tyrant,” stating this was “exactly what the founders of this nation feared.”
The White House was quick to issue a response.
Spokesman Harrison Fields pushed back forcefully.
He revived criticism of Walz’s handling of Minnesota during the 2020 protests and unrest.
Fields also referenced Walz’s position on the “losing Democrat ticket” alongside Kamala Harris, describing their previous administration as “one of the most chaotic in American history.”

The exchange at the law school commencement highlights the intense political climate and the ongoing sharp disagreements between Democratic figures and the current administration.
