Epic XL Patty Melt

This indulgent patty melt takes the classic sandwich to new heights with double smashed burger patties, perfectly caramelized onions, and a blend of melty cheeses. The homemade burger sauce and toasted sourdough bread elevate this comfort food favorite into something truly spectacular.


Ingredients
For the Burger Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons sweet relish (or dill relish)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- Smoked paprika
- All-purpose seasoning (or salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder)
- 3 tablespoons diced chives
For the Patty Melt:
- Two 5-6 oz portions of 80/20 ground beef
- Havarti cheese slices
- Swiss cheese slices
- Sourdough bread
- 1 sweet onion, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter, divided
- Avocado oil
- All-purpose seasoning (or salt and pepper)

Step 1: Make the Burger Sauce
Mix 1/2 cup mayonnaise and 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard in a bowl.

Add 2 tablespoons sweet relish and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.

Add 1/4 cup ketchup, smoked paprika, and all-purpose seasoning.

Whisk to combine all ingredients.

Add finely diced chives and mix well.

Step 2: Prepare and Caramelize the Onions
Slice sweet onion thinly.

Heat skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon butter and avocado oil.

Add onions to skillet and season with all-purpose seasoning.

Add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce.

Cook onions low and slow for about 15 minutes until caramelized.

Step 3: Toast the Bread
Clean skillet and add butter.

Toast sourdough bread until golden brown on both sides.

Step 4: Cook the Burger Patties
Season burger patties with all-purpose seasoning.

Heat cast iron skillet to medium-high and add 1 tablespoon butter.

Place first patty in skillet and smash flat.

Cook until crust forms, then flip.

Add Havarti cheese and allow to melt.

Repeat process with second patty.

Step 5: Assemble the Patty Melt
Spread burger sauce on both pieces of toasted sourdough.

Layer first burger patty, caramelized onions, and additional cheese.

Add second burger patty and top with more cheese.

Melt cheese using a kitchen torch or broiler.

Top with remaining bread slice and press down gently.
