Elon Musk blamed for 10-point Republican loss in Wisconsin after $20 million spending spree and cheesehead stunt

The world’s richest man just got served a brutal political reality check that cost Republicans big time.

Elon Musk’s controversial Wisconsin campaign blitz has left GOP strategists scrambling to distance themselves from what many are calling a spectacular backfire.

The End of an Era

Musk’s official role steering President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has officially wrapped up, but the political damage from his tenure is just beginning to surface.

The Tesla CEO spent nearly $300 million supporting Trump’s 2024 victory, quickly becoming one of the administration’s most visible and controversial figures.

His departure comes after what insiders describe as growing frustration within Republican circles about his increasingly erratic behavior and political missteps.

DOGE’s Mixed Legacy

During his tenure, Musk wielded a metaphorical chainsaw through federal agencies, promising to slash $2 trillion from the government budget.

The reality proved far more modest – DOGE ultimately achieved roughly $175 billion in savings through asset sales and contract cancellations.

Many of the organization’s most aggressive cuts were blocked or reversed by federal courts, leading to a series of high-profile legal battles.

“Elon Musk made the most serious attempt at reducing the size and scope of government in modern political history. It was at times chaotic but impactful,” veteran GOP strategist Ryan Williams told Fox News.

Behind the Scenes Tensions

While Trump publicly praised Musk’s efforts, sources reveal a different story behind closed doors.

One veteran Republican strategist, speaking anonymously, didn’t mince words about the growing frustration.

“People got really sick of him really quickly. He was fun to begin with, but people inside and around the administration and people outside were tired of Musk by the end, when he’s sitting in a meeting wearing multiple hats on his head.”

Musk’s recent criticism of Trump’s “big beautiful bill” further strained relationships within the administration.

The Wisconsin Disaster

But it was Musk’s Wisconsin Supreme Court campaign intervention that truly exposed his political liabilities.

The billionaire poured roughly $20 million into supporting Trump-backed conservative candidate Brad Schimel.

In a move that would later be seen as tone-deaf, Musk appeared at a Green Bay rally wearing a cheesehead hat – the iconic foam wedge beloved by Packers fans.

He even handed out $1 million checks to Wisconsin voters who had signed a petition, creating a spectacle that dominated news coverage.

What was supposed to be a close race turned into a Democratic rout, with Schimel losing by a devastating 10-point margin.

The loss was particularly stinging because it transformed what should have been a competitive judicial election into a referendum on Musk himself.

Democrats successfully made Musk the face of Republican excess, painting him as an out-of-touch billionaire trying to buy elections.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Democrats are already signaling they plan to make Musk a central figure in their 2026 midterm strategy.

“Elon is, and forever will be, an instantly-recognizable manifestation of the fact that House Republicans don’t work for the American people, they work for the billionaires,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee national press secretary Viet Shelton told Fox News.

However, some Republican strategists believe the Wisconsin loss was an anomaly rather than a predictor of future electoral problems.

The question now is whether Musk’s political brand can recover from what many see as a self-inflicted wound that cost Republicans a crucial victory.

While his official government role may be over, Musk’s political influence – for better or worse – will likely continue shaping Republican fortunes heading into the crucial 2026 midterms.
