Amid soaring tensions in the Middle East, President Trump convened top advisors for urgent talks on Iran.
However, reports surfaced suggesting the nation’s top intelligence official was not initially included in this crucial gathering.
Middle East On Edge as Iran Tensions Mount
The region is experiencing a dramatic surge in conflict following preemptive strikes by Israel on Iranian targets.
Israel stated these actions were necessary to counter Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program and safeguard its own survival.
The strikes triggered retaliatory actions from Tehran, escalating fears of wider war.
President Trump has consistently taken a firm stance against Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, repeatedly warning Tehran against pursuing such capabilities.
Differing Emphases on Iran’s Nuclear Threat?
Earlier this year, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Presenting the intelligence community’s assessment, she stated that Iran was not currently *building* a nuclear weapon.
“The intelligence community continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon, and Supreme Leader Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear weapons program that he suspended in 2003,” Gabbard told the committee in March.
She added that they were monitoring if Iran would reauthorize the program and noted the country’s unprecedented enriched uranium stockpile.
However, when asked about Gabbard’s testimony recently, President Trump offered a different perspective on how close Iran might be to a nuclear device.
“I don’t care what she said. I think they were very close to having one,” Trump stated while traveling back from the G7 summit.
Administration Claims Alignment Despite Apparent Contradiction
Despite the President’s seemingly dismissive comment regarding Gabbard’s specific testimony point, the White House has maintained that Trump and his Director of National Intelligence are aligned on Iran.
A White House official told Fox News Digital that the distinction between Gabbard’s testimony and Trump’s remarks is one “without a difference.”
The official pointed out that Gabbard’s testimony also acknowledged Iran’s significant resources and capabilities, suggesting the country *could* build a weapon if it chose to.
This aligns with Trump’s focus on the *potential* and *proximity* of the threat based on Iran’s accumulated materials.
Intelligence assessments from various sources also emphasize Iran’s technical capability.
Gen. Michael Kurilla, head of U.S. Central Command, warned just before Israel’s strikes that Iran has enough material for a weapon within roughly one week.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also noted Iran’s large stockpile of 60% enriched uranium, which can quickly be converted to weapons-grade levels.
Missing from the War Room?
Amidst the rapidly evolving situation, President Trump reportedly gathered his top national security team for critical discussions at Camp David earlier in June, prior to Israel’s preemptive strikes.
Attendees included key figures such as Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
However, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was reportedly not among those invited to this specific meeting at the presidential retreat.
Fox News learned Gabbard had scheduling issues related to National Guard activation in California at the time, but was nonetheless not invited to the Camp David session.
Despite her reported absence from that particular meeting, Gabbard was later confirmed to be present in the White House Situation Room as President Trump monitored the ongoing clashes in the Middle East.
President Trump continues to issue strong statements on Iran, demanding the country cease missile attacks and threatening further action if its nuclear pursuits are not halted.
The focus remains squarely on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, a goal the administration maintains is shared across its leadership.
