A long-serving member of Congress has passed away.

His death follows a significant announcement that surprised many.

Remembering a Career in Public Service

Democratic Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia died Wednesday.

He was 75 years old.

Connolly represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District.

This area includes parts of Northern Virginia outside of Washington, D.C.

He had served in Congress since 2009.

Before his time on Capitol Hill, Connolly had a distinguished career in local government.

He spent 14 years on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

Five of those years were spent as the board’s chairman.

Fairfax County is a large jurisdiction, home to over a million residents.

His tenure in local and federal government spanned nearly four decades.

Tributes From Across the Aisle

News of his passing drew responses from colleagues on both sides of the political spectrum.

Former President Joe Biden offered his condolences.

Biden called Connolly a man of “deep integrity, principle, and purpose.”

“He was a dear friend, a fierce leader for working families, and someone I was proud to partner with throughout our careers,” Biden wrote.

Biden recalled working with Connolly early in their careers on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He also mentioned collaborating on legislation when Biden was president.

Rep. James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, also issued a statement.

Comer chaired the House Oversight Committee, where Connolly served as the top Democrat.

“I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Ranking Member Gerry Connolly. He was a dedicated public servant who represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District with honor and integrity,” Comer stated.
“We mourn the loss of our friend and colleague, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Serving on Key Committees

Throughout his time in the House, Connolly was a member of significant committees.

He served on the House Oversight Committee.

He was also a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

After the November elections, House Democrats selected him for a prominent role.

He became the ranking member of the Oversight Committee.

This position is the top Democratic spot on the powerful panel.

A Family’s Farewell

Connolly’s family shared the news in a heartfelt statement.

They announced he passed away peacefully at his home.

He was surrounded by family.

“It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family,” the statement read.

They praised his dedication to Northern Virginia.

“We were fortunate to share Gerry with Northern Virginia for nearly 40 years because that was his joy, his purpose, and his passion,” they said.

His family expressed pride in his life’s work.

“His absence will leave a hole in our hearts, but we are proud that his life’s work will endure for future generations.”

They concluded by thanking the community for their support.

“We thank you for your love of Gerry, and know he loved you all so much.”

Health Challenges and Recent Events

In November of the previous year, Connolly had shared difficult personal news.

He announced he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

He began undergoing treatment, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

While initial treatments were successful in beating back the cancer…

…sadly, it returned.

The Shocking Announcement

It was just weeks before his passing that Gerry Connolly made the announcement hinted at in the headline.

He informed his constituents that he would not be seeking re-election in 2026.

This decision also meant he would step down from his position as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

In an open letter, he explained the difficult reality: his cancer had returned.

He described this as his “sun is setting on my time in public service.”

This personal health challenge led to his decision to conclude his long career in elected office.

Gerry Connolly’s death marks the third loss of a House Democrat this year, following Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas and Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona.

His passing leaves a vacancy in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District.

He is remembered for his many years dedicated to serving his constituents and the wider region.
