Deadly bacteria found in sandwiches sold at airports, hospitals and grocery stores sends 10 to emergency rooms
A routine lunch break turned into a nightmare for dozens of people across four states. What they thought was a convenient grab-and-go meal became a dangerous encounter with a potentially deadly pathogen.

The Investigation Begins
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration launched an urgent investigation after reports started flooding in from California and Nevada. People were falling seriously ill after eating what seemed like perfectly normal sandwiches.
The symptoms were alarming enough that every single person affected required immediate hospitalization. This wasn’t just a case of mild food poisoning – something much more serious was at play.

The Hidden Danger
What makes this particular contamination so concerning is the nature of the pathogen involved. Listeria monocytogenes is no ordinary food-borne bacteria.
While many people might experience relatively mild symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, the bacteria can cause devastating complications in vulnerable populations.
Pregnant women, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems face the highest risk. The infection can lead to confusion, stiff neck, loss of balance, and even convulsions.

The Timeline of Contamination
The contaminated products were sold during a specific window that caught thousands of unsuspecting customers. Sales occurred between April 18th and April 25th, 2025.
The products carried use-by dates ranging from April 22nd all the way to May 19th, meaning some contaminated items could still be sitting in refrigerators across the affected states.

The Massive Recall
Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC initiated an enormous recall covering 86 different types of ready-to-eat sandwiches. The products were packaged under three different brand names: Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away.
The recalled items include everything from Mike’s Tuna Mac Pasta to Caprese Baguettes, Breakfast Bistro Boxes, and Italian Ciabatta Sandwiches. The variety was extensive, affecting numerous meal options that busy consumers relied on.
All 10 hospitalized victims had consumed these products before developing listeriosis symptoms. Eight cases were reported in California, while two occurred in Nevada.

Immediate Action Required
The FDA is urging anyone who purchased these products to dispose of them immediately and thoroughly clean any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with the contaminated food.
